Power Pro Online for Wii

May 18, 2007 - As first announced last week, Konami will be bringing its
Power Pro Baseball series to both the PS2 and Wii this year. The latest issue
of Famitsu has a few new details on the game, known as Jikkyou Powerful Pro
Baseball 14 on the PS2 and Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Wii on the Wii (why
the 14 is missing from the Wii version, and what will happen when part 15
inevitably comes out, we're not sure).
Both versions of the game seem to feature the same visual engine, suggesting
that Konami has taken the easy route with Wii development here. For the most
part, the Famitsu screens didn't differentiate between Wii and PS2, although
the two Wii specific screens did appear to be in standard 4/3 resolution. No
word yet on an option for 16x9 play.
The two games share the same basic set of modes. Owners of either system can
forward to an updated Success Mode, where you create your very own big-headed
baseball player. Konami is also preparing what appears to be an extension of
this mode, with players taking on the role of coach.
While it may be a bit disconcerting to see another PS2 game being brought
over to the Wii, visuals mostly unchanged, Konami seems to be porting just
about everything over, including online play. In both versions, you'll be
able to build up a public "My Room," now in 3D, with items purchased with
"Power" money. During online play, this room serves as your base of
operations. In addition to one on one online matches, the game promises a few
other online features that will be revealed in the future.
So will Wii and PS2 fans get to face off against one another? Sadly, it
doesn't seem so. However, online play for both versions will be free.
There are a couple of differences worth mentioning between the two versions.
The PS2 version includes options for importing data from past titles. It will
also support some sort of link-up with the recent PSP entry in the series,
Power Pro Baseball Portable 2. These are, of course, missing from the Wii
version.
To make up for it, Konami is including a few Wii-only features. The Wii
version will include support for multiple controllers. In addition to the
Wiimote/nunchuck combo, you can opt to use the Classic Controller or your
GameCube controller collection.
As mentioned in our initial look, the Wii version will also include the
"Remote Power" mode, where you make use of the Wiimote for direct pitching
and batting. Playable against the computer or another player, this mode is
said to control similar to Wii Sports, although the game's producer joked
that the goal is to cross that title.
Both versions of Powerful Pro Baseball hit Japan on 7/19. Big headed baseball
doesn't fly outside of Japan, so interested parties will want to import.
