I just got done playing a couple of hours of Red Steel, and I
must say, I'm quite impressed with what I've played so far.
The controls do definitely take some time getting used to. It's
a bit awkward at first. You're sort of clumsy, and you really
can't aim too well. The game's learning curve is definitely
steep. But once you get used to it, you'll be shooting with the
greatest of ease, and it feels really natural afterwards.
It's a far more strategic FPS than I expected. The enemies do
use cover, albeit not to well, so while it's easy in that
aspect, they have dead-eye aim, probably much better than yours
in the beginning. You really have to jump, take cover, and
never stay out in the open or you'll be dead pretty quickly.
The life works similar to Halo; if you get shot up, your
adrenaline will start pumping, you'll hear your heart beating,
and then your life meter will refill on it's own.
As for the swordplay, it's not bad, but it can definitely use
some improvement in the sequel. You can swing the Wii to hit
the opponent, and you can strafe and use the nunchuck to block
blows. While it's a enjoyable little event in the game, it's
definitely not a noticable or vital gameplay component.
Thankfully, they're not too frequent, though earning respect by
choosing to kill or let your opponents live is pretty cool.
The presentation, alongside graphics and sound are incredibly
well done. The game's story is told through a series of
comic-like cutscenes, and the game's music is, needless to say,
phenomenal. Really, it's orchestated, and sets the mood
perfectly. If I have one complaint, it's that the engrish
voice-acting can be a bit wonky at some times. The graphics are
by far the best of the Wii's launch line up. It's nice, crisp
and clean. The lighting effects and textures are brilliant, and
when you first play, you can definitely tell that this is a
title that couldn't be done on the GCN. The best part is, that
the whole environment is interactive; you can shoot and even
destroy just about anything in the room; you can even flip
tables and use them for cover; be warned, the enemy will use
the same tactics, and be sure to hide behind something sturdy;
because that table or decorative piece can be blown to bits,
and there goes your cover.
Despite all this, I've yet to get close to finishing the game,
and I still have yet to try the multiplayer. A full review will
come in due time, probably later this week. But I'm definitely
impressed with what I've played so far.
