When we think of Japan, what comes to mind among other thi
ngs is the tea ceremony, temples, manga and video games. But
video games, which are a key aspect of “Cool Japan,” are
often frowned upon. What’s worse is that most video games f
rom the 1970s through to the 90s are in danger of being lost
. Time and humidity have started to erode the games’ device
s -- floppy discs, magnetic tapes, and consoles. Many device
s from the golden age of Japanese video games are already be
yond repair. Restoring and preserving these icons of a bygon
e era has become an urgent task. If nothing is done, a big p
art of Japanese popular culture will be lost. As a counterme
asure, an NPO called the Game Preservation Society was found
ed in 2011. 45 people from different backgrounds run the NPO
. Some of the members are system engineers; others are docto
rs, salarymen or librarians. They all share the same passion
– a love for video games.
Directed by a video game novice, this documentary is a tri
bute to the organization’s work, video games and pixel art.
The story features a Japanese graphic designer based in Kyo
to. A virtual character he created, Amaya Pixel, is on a mis
sion to save old video games. Amaya uses pixel art to introd
uce the goals of the Game Preservation society, which are: c
ollecting, repairing and preserving games, bringing them to
the public, recording the game play, and last but not least,
creating a comprehensive archive of Japanese video games an
d devices. This way, researchers, historians and writers can
rediscover forgotten games and write an objective and compr
ehensive history of this important aspect of Japanese cultur
e. Strangely enough, the NPO is the brainchild of a French c
itizen named Joseph Redon. Ever since his youth in the Frenc
h Alps, Redon’s been passionate about Japanese culture. He
grew up with Japanese video games like many European and Ame
rican people of his generation. When he arrived in Tokyo in
2000, he was shocked to discover that video games were left
to languish within an inclusive community. So he started buy
ing games on the internet and networking with Japanese peopl
e who shared the same concerns. Joseph Redon says that recog
nition of the value of Japanese culture often comes from abr
oad. This is what happened with ukiyo-e. The major collectio
ns of woodblock prints, “pictures of the floating world,”
-- landscapes, female beauties or kabuki actor --, belong to
foreign private collectors. Japanese people were late in ac
knowledging the artistic value of these “cheap” prints fro
m the Edo period. Redon fears this too could happen with Jap
anese video games. The games already threatened with extinct
ion and no public institution seems to care. “Thanks to the
ir different sensitivity, only Japanese people could have ma
de these games,” says Redon. “It’s important that they dr
aw on their own history in order to be able to go on making
games. This is why this heritage must remain in Japan for th
e Japanese people, and indirectly for foreigners, because we
will enjoy the magnificent work they will make in the futur
e”.
