Rubik’s Cube keeps champs twisting and turning

The Rubik's Cube has been around for over 30 years, yet it is still as
popular as ever with around 350 million cubes sold.

The Rubik's Cube was invented by a Hungarian architect in 1974.

34 years later in Manchester, the planets most popular toy is being twisted
and turned at a truly ferocious rate.

Brendan Vallance, UK Speedcube Champion, fastest time ever was 7.21 seconds.

10.66 seconds was the winning time at these champs, but other players were
not far behind.

Many even claimed they are caught up in a vicious cycle they cannot escape.

“If you ask most cubists they will tend to tell you that they are,” says
Dan Harris, the UK record holder. “If they see a solved cube they want to
scramble it, but then if they see a scrambled cube they can’t help but solve
it. So again, another vicious circle.”

The record for solving a cube was set at the Czech Open earlier this year, at
7.08 seconds.

To achieve such amazing times, competitors often lube their cube and even use
nail files to smooth the rough plastic edges.

“For me I just want to, I just want to… I feel like I always need to do
something with my hands,” says Mr Harris. “It gives me something to do and
then there’s always a goal I can try and get faster and faster every single
time.”

The path to success is paved with choices with just over 43 quintillion
possible combinations.
